Pink
Wren Fielden-Joelson
Digital (Adobe Fresco)
2100 px x 2100 px
My intention for this piece was to share a memory, connecting to a wider audience while retaining a personal touch. A message on societal issues that reflects even in young children, hating a color without even knowing why. It was never about the color.

Day Trip
Wren Fielden-Joelso
Watercolor, gouache, linoleum stamp, color pencil, on watercolor paper
15.24cm x 10.16cm
Inspired by the idea of time capsules and my personal experience of writing letters to family whenever traveling, this piece is a postcard of the lake I would kayak at. The address listed is my childhood house, and the stamp is connected to the birds we would see at the lake. I printed the stamp in blue as a tie to the blue pens I would use to fill out every postcard I sent.

The Virtues of a Princess
Wren Fielden-Joelson
Acrylic, tissue paper, beads, buttons, puffy paint, glitter glue, color pencil, on canvas
31cm x 31cm
The concept of this piece is that of a child in power giving space to those without. Working with the idea that all children are good and the world is what turns them cruel, this utilizes the unawareness of childhood with a no kings message ingrained. The background is full of evil things in our current society, simplified into stickers, with a war motif. The inner explosion is reactive, mirroring the look of childhood arts and crafts; this is representative of the power of a child who wants to be kind.

VHS Tape
Wren Fielden-Joelso
Linoleum print on paper
10 x 15cm
This piece was inspired by a VHS tape, specifically, the VHS tape for the emperor's new groove movie I had as a child. The crack in the middle shows the fragility of moments, fleeting and quick. The flowers show that although these times won’t last, the memory can still remain beautiful. Something will always come of the passage of time.

The Brave Ballerina
Wren Fielden-Joelson
Digital, Ibispaint X, adobe photoshop, procreate
2304px x 3072px
Inspired by a variety of things, ranging from pippi longstockings, chitty chitty bang bang, to the brave tin soldier, this piece is a tribute to tomfoolery and tomboyism alike. Intended to capture the whimsy of childhood, and the beauty in being scattered, and unladylike. I aimed to depict a hodgepodge of all the women I looked up to as a child while using elements like colors or get up to bridge the gap between being graceful and tomboy.

Kintsugi Rose
Wren Fielden-Joelson
Clay, Glaze, Heavy Body Tempura
11 x 12.5 x 1.7cm
This piece was inspired by pink roses found in my grandmother's backyard. Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken ceramics with gold filling, reflects the ability to overcome adversity and reform difficulties into something beautiful. I made this while thinking of “Nothing Gold Can Stay”, poem by Robert Frost.

Ghost Film
Wren Fielden-Joelson
Gouache
7.5 cm x 9.5 cm (x3)
This triptych is inspired by Studio Ghibli’s coming of age stories. These depict a progression of time as the ghost grows and becomes more bold. I wanted to depict life, growing up, utilizing composition and color schemes to project the ghosts inner feelings outward.
