Curatorial Rationale
My exhibitions focus specifically on the relationship between beauty and vulnerability within aquatic ecosystems. I decided to narrow my theme to certain marine species and parts of the environment, such as coral reefs, jellyfish, turtles, seashells from the ocean, etc. My goal within this theme was to create a sense of emotional awareness. I wanted the viewers to be attracted by the beauty and detail and gradually recognize the hidden message about environmental oceanic responsibilities.
I specifically chose these 5 artworks because they stand out the most in terms of portraying my theme the best. Each piece connects with my theme as my body of work depicts a variety of animals and different settings in the ocean and marine life.
I intended for the arrangement of my exhibition to be balanced, as I will have “Oceanic Waste” as the center of attention in my exhibition because of the mixed media incorporated and it is one of the largest artworks I have. I have three other artworks, which are acrylic paintings being “Shells by the Shore” and “ Beneath the Blue”, as they will be on one side, with the other canvas being “Iridescent Glow” on the other side, along with my ceramic piece, “Hidden Depths”. Although I only have one ceramic piece, it does not stand out as much as the mixed media artwork. My intentions with the way I arranged my exhibition were to bring tension to the main focus out of the other pieces.
The selection of artworks I chose includes acrylic paintings, ceramics, and mixed media pieces incorporating plastic bottles, straws, tissue paper, zip lock bags, and more. This theme allowed me to explore both experimentation and depth in my artworks. Technically, I developed better control with blending and texture, along with using contrast between vibrant ocean blues and darker tones to symbolize the environmental decline.
During this process, I learned how important it is to research and be intentional in creating symbolic and meaningful artwork. I was influenced by the way light filters through water and distorts form, which encouraged me to continue more pieces with painting. By narrowing my focus to specific marine life and environmental concerns, my exhibition became more cohesive.
Additionally, the connections I made with my theme reflects the idea that the ocean is not separate from us, instead, it is a vital living system that reflects our responsibility as humans have an impact on the ocean. Through the process of my body of work, my experiences have helped me grasp a better sense of my surroundings in relation to my theme.
