Mira Loma High School has long been an international school. The students who attend MLHS come from all over the city to take advantage of the International Baccalaureate (I.B.) and International Studies (I.S.) Programs as well as surround their students with diverse experiences and perspectives. The Asian Art Festival is one in a series of cultural celebrations that are held annually and attended each school year.

Originally a collection of art that came as the result of an I.S. English-Art Touchpoint between Ms. Ochoa English and Mrs. Char’s Art Class, more and more classes, programs, and student clubs have been included to create an all-day explosion of Asian Art.

There is a lot happening! At this festival one might see Japanese Taiko Drums, Chinese Dragons Dances, Hear Haikus read, observe Internment Camp inspired art, list to music, and marvel at traditional dancing and cultural garments that make this festival a celebration of colorful art in the dull days of winter.

Everyone who is anyone is there! All classes from all grade levels and programs are encouraged to participate in creating contributions to the Asian Art Festival. As the Festival continues to be a MLHS tradition, the methods, styles, and types of art change over time, but the passion to express themselves comes across in each student collection.

It touches the mind and the heart. One of the most compelling and reflective collections of art is the Japanese American Internment Camp, Inspired Art. This collection comes from when all people of Japanese descent, living on the west coast were forced to move into internment camps where they were held captive from 1942-1944. They lost their homes, businesses, possessions, and even their pets. They did not know where they were going or how long they would be gone. They had no idea what would happen to them. Their grief and hope are captured in the art they produced. This juxtaposition of emotions inspire the I.S and MYP Artists.

Let us share with you what our Matadors create and share!

We hope that you enjoy each and every collection!
