A Peak into the Artist’s Mind…
Curatorial Rationale
Curatorial Rationale
Miguel Arroyo Perez Blind Voyage Acrylic on Canvas 25.5 cm x 20cm
This piece was inspired by my cousin who had started taking horseback riding lessons and I was interested in horses. Also inspired by how Diego Rivera displayed different things of his culture, so the painting displays me on a horseback with a charro outfit on wielding a sword with a blindfold on. My intention is to connect to my Mexican culture and how I approach different situations, with the blindfold and sword I often go in recklessly.
Miguel Arroyo Perez Athlete-Student Acrylic on canvas 25.5 cm x 20cm
My artwork was inspired by my life and how I tend to value sports over my schoolwork despite it being a privilege to play sports. It shows my dedication and passion for the sports that I play. My intention was to display the three sports, soccer, football, and track and field. Whilst also displaying my school life.
Miguel Arroyo Perez Crossroads Acrylic on Canvas 50.8 cm x 40.64 cm
Inspired by the song, Crossroads, by Avenged Sevenfold, this artwork depicts the first stanza that describes the scene of a church and watering hole. The character depicted demonstrates the message of having to pick from both sides and ends up creating their own path down the middle, “A combination of both these lives, A central path, without choosing a side”
Miguel Arroyo Perez Dancing Dead Charcoal, Chalk Pastel on paper 60.96 cm x 45.72 cm
Relating to the cultural celebration of Dia De Los Muertos, this piece is based off how people may celebrate the festival. The graveyard is decorated with marigold flowers and it is a lively scene, even if there are dead people. It depicts myself facing the scene, that scene being a graveyard with skeletons moving around and alebrijes, a cat-owl, on a skeleton’s shoulder.
Miguel Arroyo Perez Meowl Manor Colored Pencil on Paper 45.7 cm x 30.5 cm
The intention of this project was to convey internal thoughts of whimsical and imagination. The image is me riding a griffin soaring through the skies, as there is a meowl joining us. In the background there is a castle in the background to add to the scenery of a mystic feeling.
Miguel Arroyo Perez Jack Of All Trades Acrylic, Cardboard, Felt, Playing Cards 29.5 cm x 29.5 cm x 18 cm
The meaning of the artwork evokes the feeling of being overwhelmed with so many things to balance. Inspired by the tediousness of making a house of cards, this work is a reflection upon life and balancing all of the activities one can do and while you might try to balance it all, sometimes it all falls, where you now choose to rebuild it or leave it all on the table.
