Haerin Kim

My body of work is about nature, man and animal. I wanted to create artworks that had both humans and animals that showed modern day issues and ideas along with more metaphoric speeches. I wanted the viewers to think about each artwork and think about my meanings and ideas along with their own thoughts and opinions on the artworks. In order to do this I tried not to make my artworks too obvious but instead more obscure. Majority of my artworks are symbolistic. I love adding symbolism to my artworks because different things are symbolic to people in different ways. I also love working with a variety of mediums. I use the mediums that I think fit best with my theme and meanings behind my pieces. I feel like I have become more informed and comfortable with creating contemporary artworks and I’ve gotten to dive deeper into the artwork of this century. I tried to play close attention to the titles of my artworks to lead the viewer into the right direction of thought while still trying to make them really think about the meanings of my artworks. I placed my artworks in order of the time they were created starting from left to right like a book. I did this in order to show my progression of technique and taking on different mediums to improve and develop my artworks and skills even further. Through the Exhibition I want the viewers to reflect on the symbolism and meanings behind my artworks as well as express their own takes about my art.

Entities In Nature

Haerin Kim

Mixed Media: Magazine, Paper, Pencil, Oil Pastel

41.91 cm x 53.34 cm

This mixed media piece was inspired by Jesse Treece. I was influenced by Treece’s surrealism collages. I wanted to make a collage with everyday objects and views contrasted with plants and animals. I did this to show that plants, animals, humans and human made things can coexist in harmony.

Alarm

Haerin Kim

Watercolor on Paper

35.56cm x 50.8cm

My work represents a sense of fear that comes with phobias. The phobia I chose was haemophobia: fear of blood. Since my theme for this project was fear, I tried to represent the feeling and expression of fear and anxiety in this painting. I have never painted a full watercolor piece so I chose it in order to get more comfortable with the medium. I started off this piece by lightly sketching on the watercolor paper, layering on the colors, outlining and adding the final details.

Contagious

Haerin Kim

Mixed Media: Copic Marker, Pencil, Colored Pencil

20.32cm x 22.86cm

This artwork was inspired by Alison Watt’s simulated paintings of fabric textures. My intentions for this piece was to create an artwork that shows how nature and technology are opposites and how the rapid spread of technology is almost “contagious”. If you look closely, the people on the bed were watching something on their computer and one is even holding a phone and they are slowly growing sick and tired.

Heart and Mind

Haerin Kim

Ink on Paper

15.24cm x 15.24cm

My artwork was inspired by Paul Cézanne’s ‘Pyramid of Skulls’. I was inspired by the skulls and his impressionist style of his artwork. My intention for this piece was to create a combination of a skull and a human heart to represent the saying “balance of the heart and mind”. I cross hatched the shading to show off more of the impressionist style. The contrast between the black and white and the solid black branches contrasted with the crosshatched shading brings the piece together.

Changes

Haerin Kim

Digital Art

15.24 cm x 10.16 cm

My artwork was inspired by Clayton S. King’s ‘Memengwaa (butterfly)’ painting. I was inspired by the vibrant orange and the symbolism behind butterflies. Butterflies symbolize many things but I decided to focus on the symbolism of change. My intentions for this piece was to draw a girl who is finding her true self as she gets older and older. I wanted to draw the butterflies as hair clips instead of having them flying around.
