“What is your favorite artwork?”

Curatorial Rationale

The theme of my body of work has changed several times over the course of my IB Art years. Since my first year in IB Art I have been drawn to exploring themes of femininity and creating pieces that feature the female figure. My body of work is centered around the theme of femininity in nature and my art pieces aim to show the relationship between the natural world and the feminine qualities. I have used a variety of techniques and mediums to create my body of work such as acrylic on canvas, paper mache, linoleum printing, digital photography, and mixed media. I chose my theme of femininity in nature because of the variety of ways I could create art pieces within that theme. Additionally, I really like depicting the female body in my art pieces and found ways I could practice creating pieces I liked aesthetically by tying the figures into a greater overall theme. I think it is important to acknowledge the beauty of femininity, and this was what originally drew me to this theme. In my personal life, I have felt that society has rarely celebrated physical beauty of women and often condemned or put down those who embrace it. Though I have noticed a greater appreciation for feminine beauty more recently, especially in the media I surround myself with, I felt it was important to showcase how the qualities of beauty, especially a feminine beauty, are mirrored in the natural world, meaning that all facets of femininity are beautiful because of their connection to nature.

My inspiration came from a variety of sources. I have had the opportunity to visit many art galleries, museums, and exhibitions, on local and international levels. I believe that getting to see firsthand the differences in art pieces, especially internationally, has deeply influenced my artworks. I have also pulled inspiration from historical and mythological figures such as Gaia, the Greek goddess of Earth, who was part of my inspiration for my pieces "Ivy” and “Overgrown.” I also took inspiration from my own personal experiences and observations of societal expectations on beauty when creating my piece “Lightning.” The first piece I made for my exhibition was my acrylic painting “Blue Body,” this piece was actually one of my biggest inspirations when creating the rest of my body of work. I was very proud of how it came out and knew I wanted to tie my exhibition together with similar artistic intentions to those I had when painting that piece.

For my exhibition, I was allotted a small amount of space to show my art pieces, this is due to the size of my art class in comparison to the size of the art gallery where we showcased our work. My organization within that space was to intentionally create a cluster of vibrancy. I wanted my pieces to be a vibrant and bold spot of color and artwork and since many of my art pieces follow a similar color palette, I was able to create a cohesive exhibition that was balanced throughout the entire wall.

In curating this exhibition, my goal was to create a joyful and vibrant collection of art pieces that brought my theme of femininity in nature together with visual aesthetics. My intention is for viewers to not only appreciate the beauty of my art pieces but also to acknowledge that feminine beauty can go beyond traditional notions of beauty and so much of its qualities are seen in the natural world as well. In my exhibition, I aim to show the multifaceted aspects of femininity. From fluidity and movement to symbolic representations of growth and connection, I want my viewers to take a sort of appreciation from my pieces of the beauty embodied by women and how it is mirrored in nature’s rhythms.

Claire’s Art Work

  • Iris, 2024

    Digital Art on Procreate

    21.50cm x 27.9cm

This piece is inspired by Iris, the goddess of rainbows and an important messenger in Greek mythology and by the colorful pop prints of Andy Warhol. This is a digital art piece using the program Procreate. It uses bright contrasting colors and is composed with stylistic shapes and minimal linework. This piece is symbolic of feminine hope and renewal in connection with the natural phenomena of a rainbow.

  • Goddess of the Garden, 2024

    Acrylic on Canvas

    60.75cm x 30.50cm

This piece is an acrylic painting that focuses on delicate line work. It depicts a woman sitting with her legs to one side and holding a branch of leaves. It’s inspired by various earth deities from international cultures. I chose the minimalist style because I wanted the piece to represent more than one aspect of the feminine and I mimicked the style of one-lined or single-lined artworks.

  • Breathe, 2023

Paper Mache, Acrylic, and Mixed Media on Canvas

    38.00cm x 38.00cm

This piece is of a female doll encased in a layer of paper mache and blue acrylic paint surrounded by flowers flowing in the breeze. The doll symbolizes expectations, in beauty and femininity, and though she looks confined, it seems as though she is breaking through. The piece mimics the wind with flowers swirling around her, and it captures the symbolism of breaking free from constraints and embracing one's authentic self.

  • Blue Body, 2022

    Acrylic on Canvas

    25.40cm x 35.60cm

This piece was inspired by the artwork of Stephen Conroy. His eclectic paintings with wavy color blocks influenced my use of color blocking in this piece. This painting is that of a female figure composed of colored waves in a monochromatic blue palette. This piece represents the free-flowing waves of large bodies of water translated into the subject. The beauty of the human female body is reflected in and throughout nature and this piece aims to highlight both.

  • Dance at Sunrise, 2024

    Acrylic on Canvas

    30.50cm x 23.00cm

Femininity is intertwined with nature in this acrylic painting. Two teal figures with exaggerated curves dance freely upon rolling hills with a symbolic fluidity that echoes the natural world. A red sun rises in the background and pink and yellow hues are cast into the sky. This piece embraces the natural curves and contours of the female form as a symbol of strength and interconnectedness with the curves and hills of the earth.

  • Floating, 2023

    Digital Photography

    40.60cm x 25.40cm

In this artwork, a self-portrait, I stand as a subject behind a projection of rainbow-colored bubbles floating in the air. These bubbles, symbolic of the element of air, surround my silhouette, creating an ethereal atmosphere. The bubbles, delicate and light, mirror the gracefulness and fluidity associated with feminine qualities reflecting my theme of femininity in nature.

  • Floating (2), 2023

She, 2024

Digital Photography

81.20cm x 25.40cm

This series of digital photographs explores themes of growth and femininity. I took these photographs as a series of self-portraits. Each photograph tells a story of innocence, growth, and femininity. I used myself as a female subject and created a harmony with the floral elements held close to my body. This series is symbolic of personal growth and transformation which is represented through my interactions with the growing flowers in each photograph.

Fire and Water

2023

Acrylic on Canvas

60.96cm x 30.48cm

This piece embraces traditional media pulling inspiration from a previous work of mine. The contrasting colors symbolize the powerful difference in nature between fire and water. This piece takes a radical approach to challenging societal expectations on female appearances, it is a symbol of the "perfect" body expected of women. While the blue calm waves are representative of a submissive and docile woman, the fiery background represents burning the expectations of beauty in society.

Overgrown

2024

Carved Linoleum Print, Ink on Paper

49.00cm x 46.50cm

This series of carved linoleum prints meet the playful pop art style by combining vibrant colors with simple linework in a repetitive composition. These artworks showcase two female figures with long leafy strands sprouting from their heads. The two female figures in the prints directly represent femininity and surrounding them with the leaves growing from their heads symbolizes a deep connection with nature.
