Japanese Brush Painting and Tanka Poems

By Ms. Char and Mrs. Ochoa’s IS Sophomore Students

Ms. Char and Mrs. Ochoa’s IS sophomore students studied the art and culture of Japan.  For this unit, IS Global Art students learned about traditional Japanese Brush Painting and created their own based on a theme from nature. They also learned how to write their names in Japanese and create name seals to “sign” their painting. In IS English class, students learned how to write Japanese-style “tanka” poems which have a specific syllable count.  Inspired by their brush paintings, the students wrote a tanka poem to accompany their painting. We hope you enjoy looking at these artworks!
